Every world begins with a single line.

Scroll to watch the drawing take shape.

An idea finds its form.

Faint marks become structure, shape and direction.

Layer by layer.

Graphite, patience and imagination bring the scene to life.

Until paper becomes somewhere else.

Every shadow, texture and tiny mark adds another part of the story.

The drawing is complete. The story is only beginning.

Old Farm, a pencil drawing by K.P. Butler

The work

It starts with an idea.

Graphite is unforgiving. There is no undo, no layer to hide behind, and no shortcut through the hours a drawing takes. What you are looking at is pencil on paper, built in stages, by hand.

This site is the gallery for that work — the finished pieces, the stories behind them, and the route to owning one or commissioning your own.

Process

Built in graphite. Layer by layer.

01

Construction lines

Faint layout marks set the proportions and the horizon. Most of the sheet is still bare paper.

02

Primary contours

The subject becomes recognisable. Outlines are committed and the composition finds its edges.

03

Mid-tone shading

Form arrives with tone. Layers of graphite are worked and blended until the surface has weight and depth.

04

Deep shadow and fine detail

The darkest values go in last, alongside the small marks that make the piece feel alive. Every mark has a purpose.

05

Until the paper holds a world

The finished drawing — signed, photographed and ready to hang.

Commissions

Your story, drawn in graphite.

A boat, a building, a face, a place that matters. Send the reference photographs and the idea, and K.P. Butler will tell you honestly whether it is a drawing he can do justice to.

Every drawing is filmed as it is made. The clips below come straight from the studio.

The work

Every mark has a purpose.
